Mum swaps career as an accountant to become a full-time sweep

Emma Roddy, who is originally from Flixton, launched her business Sparkling Flues earlier this month, Meet Manchester’s only female chimney sweep.

Emma Roddy has given her accountancy career the brush off to become a full-time sweep. Emma, from Flixton, is a certified chimney sweep and launched her business, Sparkling Flues this month. And as a female sweep, the mum-of-two believes she is unique in the largely male-dominated business. She said: “As far as I can seen there is no other female chimney sweep in the area. I’m only recently qualified but the business has gone absolutely bananas because people seem to want a woman. It can be quite hard going but you just roll up your sleeves and off you go. It’s really nice meeting different people every day - I love it. It can be quite a filthy job but your hygiene has to be very good.”

Emma, 38, who lives in Marsden, grew up around open fires and stoves and her interest grew when husband Paul started a job installing stoves. She said: “I had been doing accountancy for the last 20 years and I really wanted a change. I went on a training course in Derby and then did some training with one of Yorkshire’s master chimney sweeps, which was very intense. “People think it’s a dying trade but in actual fact it’s thriving. It’s a great job.”

Emma - who is a fully trained and an accredited member of The Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps - also hopes to raise awareness about carbon monoxide poisoning after a frightening experience last year. She said: “We lit a fire in our home and the CO alarm started sounding. I thought: ‘oh my god’. “We found the smoke in the flue had leaked because we didn’t have a liner. It had been leaking into the bedroom upstairs. If we didn’t have a CO alarm we would not Mum swaps career as an accountant to become a full-time sweep 1have known and that frightens me to death.”

Emma says it is vital to sweep chimneys at least once a year to prevent chimney fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. She said: “People move to new homes with open fires or stoves and don’t know what to. They don’t know when it was last swept or don’t have a C0 alarm installed. “Chimney fires can be absolutely deadly. They are very frightening and go up like a rocket.”
