Have your chimney professionally swept at least once a year - even if you burn smokeless fuel. If you burn wood, more frequent sweeping is advisable to prevent chimney fires. Have your gas and oil-fired appliances regularly serviced and don't forget to sweep their flues as well, about once a year.
