Grates

Generally used for solid fuel, a grate holds the burning fuel above an ashpan and are available in a wide range of designs and widths.

Normally made of cast iron, it would form part of a fireplace within a fireplace opening, and require a fire front (fret) in front of it. There are models available that have an integral fire front which fit the standard 16 or 18 inch milner firebricks, also known as ‘builders lumps’.
